LAFCU’s Art Sookazian Named CU Times Trailblazer 40 Below Honoree

Los Angeles, CA – December 19, 2016 – Art Sookazian, Vice President of Special Services at Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU), was recently named one of the recipients of the Credit Union Times’ 2016 Trailblazers, 40 Below program, which annually recognizes young credit union executives who are creating innovative advances in the credit union industry. Because of the distinction, Art was featured in the November 30, 2016 issue of CU Times Magazine and CuTimes.com, which included a series of articles highlighting the recipients’ professional accomplishments. The special issue profiled Art’s most recent achievement of cutting loan delinquencies at the $882 million credit union by more than half. The article said Art spearheaded the use of automated reports to improve processes and reduce loan delinquencies from 1.57% to 0.37% over a period of 24 months.

Supreme Court to Review Santander FDCPA Lawsuit

supreme_crtWashington, DC – 13 January 2017 – The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday agreed to decide whether firms collecting on debt they bought for pennies on the dollar can be held liable in lawsuits brought by debtors they targeted under a federal law cracking down on debt collectors’ abusive practices. The justices agreed to review a lower court’s decision to dismiss a consumer class action lawsuit against Santander Consumer USA Holdings Inc. (SC.N) over allegations it violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Debtors Son Arrested for Firing Shots at Repossessor

e_cllns_sprtnbrgSpartanburg, SC – 4 January 2017 – Spartanburg County deputies said a man was arrested Tuesday night after firing a gun at a tow truck that was repossessing a vehicle.

Deputies said they were called to an incident on Harrelson Road just before 11 p.m.

According to investigative reports, the tow truck was called to haul off after a woman had failed to make payments on it. The woman’s husband and sons attempted to take items from the car before it was hauled away and told deputies they had not taken all of their personal items from the car when the tow truck driver began leaving.
