Memphis, TN – November 10, 2011 – A Memphis woman received a call from a debt collector from a never before heard of law firm that offered her a unique and illegal way to pay off her debt. With sex.
In an ABC 24 News channel report, Mia Dodson shares her recorded message from an alleged Mr. Higgenbottom, who sounds suspiciously Indian, where he left on her voice mail the message If you cannot pay back with money, you can pay back with your body. That is what I am expecting from you.” He then left his work number and private cell phone. He further went on to say, “My room is open 24/7 anytime. I’ll be waiting for your call. Let’s have a wonderful night.”
These kinds of calls and other fraudulent debt collection attempts have apparently become fairly common as the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions Office recently issued a consumer alert naming the DCA Law Firm as being the supposed beneficiary of this and other scams in which attempts to collect on payday loans are being made.
While not verified as being of foreign origin, such is the danger of offshore assignment of debts for collections.
