There is one simple skip tool that every member of your staff should be trained to get up front: Your subject’s nickname. It’s so easy to request, and yet this simple piece of information will find more skips than any other tool I know.
In today’s fast pace high tech world we are all looking for the next tool to give us that edge over our competitor and our prey as well. Sometimes we need to take a page from something a Drill Sargent taught me so many years ago the “Kiss Method” which translates to “Keep It Simple Stupid” just as a carpenter does not go to work each day equipped with just a single hammer on his tool belt, because he needs to be armed with the right tools for the right job.
What has been a revelation to me is that just as we have “Three Types of Skips”, we also have “Three Types of Skip-Tracers!” The three profiles that I have created below define graduated levels of workmanship, and the correlating increase in quality and success.
Champions just as true Skip-Tracers are a rare breed—set apart from the average person in their thought processes as natural puzzle solvers who have the ability to think a little left of center. Just throw an obstacle in their path and watch how they begin looking at how to go around, under, or over said obstacle. In the military it is called, “To Adapt and Overcome”, and no one personifies this motto more so than a true skip-tracer.
No matter their line of work, the most common question I am asked is: “When should we start working a skip?” How far past-due should someone be before we start skipping them?
The answer may surprise you:
There is an old saying that a skip-tracer is only as good as his/her contacts but I believe that networking is the most important aspect to one’s personal and professional life. I owe my career to my ability to network and to those around me, which naturally includes those in my inner circle who I encounter on a daily basis, but also all those great men and women whom I sadly only get an opportunity to speak with every now and then.
You’re scratching your head and wondering what the term “Seasonal Data” refers to. I define it as the type of data that is valid only during certain times of the year due to the infrequency of updates, or because the data is derived from the type of event that happens just once a year. Because the data is developed as the result of a recent event, it can yield great results, but you need to know when to use the data (when it’s fresh) in order to avoid wasting time and resources.

Verification is More Important Than Skip-Tracing! Yes I said it, and I know that many of you may be shocked to discover that I could actually hold anything in higher regard than my much-esteemed art of skip-tracing, but let’s take a broader view of the landscape—many, many miles of landscape!
They are the Debbie Downers, always ready with bottomless pits of bad news and judgmental perspectives. They can magically/tragically turn any positive into a negative. There’s also the sly manipulators, who figure out how to push your buttons to bring out your anger.
Greetings from the great State of Alabama! Roll Tide Roll!!!
With my travels all across this great nation I have the honor of spending a great deal of time with the new generation of skip-tracers, and because of the current economic situation, I have seen an increase in the number of people leaving the corporate world and diving into the deep end of the pool: self-employment.
