VIRTUAL Bankruptcy Training This Fall

We understand that this is short notice, please let us know ASAP if you’re interested! We are not asking for a registration or commitment yet.

Don’t forget that tomorrow, Wednesday, July 29, is the deadline to let us know whether your financial institution would be interested in attending a virtual NorthLegal Advanced Bankruptcy Conference this fall! After that, we’re going to be looking to see whether it makes sense to schedule the program or whether we should just wait until next year.

I wrote about this last Friday, but include the relevant information below just in case you missed that email. The only difference is that we have taken the possible November dates off the calendar because of Veterans Day, so we are now looking at two possible dates: September 22-24 or October 27-29 (the current favorite).

If you already responded, you don’t need to respond again. If you didn’t respond but believe your financial institution would likely send someone, please let me know the following by tomorrow:

  1. How many people in your financial institution you believe would attend. (NOTE: We’re not asking for a commitment, though we hope you give the matter some thought; we’re just looking to find out what you think is likely.)
  2. Whether you would prefer September 22-24 or October 27-29.
  3. If you would like to attend but cannot be available those particular dates, you might let us know that as well.

Thanks! Below is the relevant information about the proposed program.

HOW A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE WOULD WORK

Schedule

The main course of training would run 3 full days and the schedule would be as follows:

8:00 – 9:00 am – Exhibit Hall open

9:00 – 10:30 am – Class

10:30 – 10:45 am – AM Break. Exhibit Hall open

10:45 am – noon – Class

Noon – 1:00 pm – Lunch Break. Exhibit Hall and Lounge open

1:00 – 2:30 pm – Class

2:30 – 2:45 pm – PM Break. Exhibit Hall open

2:45 – 4:00 pm – Class

4:00 – 4:30 pm – Exhibit Hall and Lounge open

Conference Content, Materials and Questions

The subject matter presented at a Virtual Advanced Bankruptcy Conference would be the same as the subject matter presented during an on-site conference. For a detailed description, click here.

Like the on-site conference, you would receive a physical binder with comprehensive handout materials with the virtual program. You would also get preconference access to at least two archived NorthLegal Webinars — Bankruptcy 101: An Introduction to Bankruptcy and Bankruptcy 102: The Automatic Stay.

You would still be able to ask questions during a virtual program, both audibly through a telephone line or your computer or by text through a chat window — whichever you prefer.

Networking

Nothing can take the place of an on-site conference for networking, but a virtual conference still gives some options. Through the “lounge” area you would be able to look to see who is online that you might recognize, join a chat threat about a particular subject, and perhaps even be “matched” with another attendee who is from a financial institution of similar size or who shares other bankruptcy-related interests.

Sponsors

If you’ve been to one of our on-site conferences you know how much our sponsors add. We’re glad to say that most or all of those sponsors have indicated they would join us at a virtual conference as well. You would be able to interact with them live through “Zoom”-type meetings before and after the program and during breaks, just as if you were talking to them at an on-site program.

Registration Fee

We wish we could offer this program at a lower cost than a live program but, because of the high cost to produce it, that isn’t possible this first year. Like the on-site conferences, early registration would be $775; general registration would be $875 and last minute registration would be $950. That fee (just like at the on-site event) is per person. We understand that may be difficult to enforce, so you’re on your honor.

Summary

That’s what we’re considering making available. As with most things, there are advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, attending a virtual event is not the same as attending an on-site event, no matter how we dress it up. It will may be harder to pay attention, networking is not as much fun, and you miss out on exploring a new city in the evenings after class. On the other hand, you save significantly on costs of travel, lodging and out-of-town meals, you don’t have to be away from home and family, you avoid exposing yourself and your family to COVID-19 risks, and you get needed training.

We believe we can provide you with a productive virtual program and would like to try. “Bankruptcy” is going to be an important topic for the next year or so and this program can help you get ready for it. But, as I said, it’s an expensive program to produce so we need to get an idea of whether there will be sufficient attendance.

Of course, if you have any questions or suggestions that would help us present a program that is useful to you, please let us know as well. Thanks!
