The Biggest and the Best Yet!
On October 19th, the California Credit Union Collectors Council (CCUCC) opened their 36th annual Educational Conference at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. A record crowd of over 250 people from states all over the nation showed up for what is the nation’s credit union collections educational and networking event. And the presentations more than lived up to their billing.
As a warm up to the actual conference, attendees and sponsor/exhibitors gathered in Planet Hollywood’s London Room for an introductory meet and greet sponsored by the American Recovery Association, Location Services, LLC, Triverity and The Loan Service Center and Paramount Lender Solutions. Attendees enjoyed an endless line-up of appetizers and hors d’oeuvres before resuming the gathering at yet another fantastic joint sponsored event at the nearby Beer Park overlooking the Bellagio fountain.
On Friday the 20th, the conference’s first full day of events opened with an introductory speech by keynote speaker Ken Evancic, Vice President – Resource Management Services, Inc., who shared his vision of the future of collections and the need for adapting to change.
Next on tap was President and CEO of Kinecta FCU, Keith Sultemeier who delivered some insight on how to increase loan volume while maintaining low loan losses. A very relevant topic in todays lending environment.
After the lunchtime break, the CCUCC presented their prestigious 2023 Impact Award to Renee Sattiewhite, President/CEO of the African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC). This esteemed award recognizes individuals who have exhibited exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the credit union community. After an introductory video of testimonies from fellow CEO’s and credit union executives, it was clear to anyone who did not know her before, just why she had earned this award.
Later in the afternoon, a panel of credit union collections managers conducted a discussion of relevant topics being encountered by credit union collections departments in the current post pandemic economy. Bill Schletter, Collections Manager at Meriwest Credit Union in San Jose, hosted an expert panel that included Shannon Stewart of Southland CU, Thomas VonEschen of SchoolsFirst FCU, William Perella of Sales-Sentry Credit and Jesse Vasquez of Water and Power CCU as they dove into the current collections landscape, including the topics of remote work and measuring staff productivity.
In closing the conferences first day of conversations was a panel of repossession industry experts hosted by James McNeil, owner of Daybreak Metro Recovery of Sacramento, California. The panel, consisted of James McNeil, CEO of Daybreak Metro, Domenic Clegg, Owner of Benchmark Asset Resolutions, Inc., Marcelle Egley, President of the California Association of Licensed Repossessors (CALR) and owner of ABA Recovery and representing the American recovery Association (ARA) was industry legend, Les McCook.
From lot capacity to the ever-increasing dangers in the field, they discussed in great detail the current state of the repossession industry and how their financial crisis affects the credit union collections industry and their ability to recovery collateral.
And the party carried on into that night with another cocktail party at the London Room followed by additional parties hosted by sponsor exhibitors at other venues.
Saturday morning’s Keynote speaker was a familiar one to all, legendary Credit Union Collections Attorney and speaker, Eric North who shared some of the current hot topics affecting collectors and lenders as we manage through this time of economic uncertainty.
In closing, Joel Bowen, President of CCUCC, proclaimed; “A special Thank you to all our conference sponsors, without them the conference would not be a success. I would also like to mention a special Thank you to Mary Hernandez, my Co-Chair who provided me with much needed support as well as the entire 2023 Conference Committee. Would also like to give recognition to all our Conference Sponsors, without them the conference would not be a success.”
Joel adds a quote from Hellen Keller in closing. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” CCUCC continues its tradition of providing exceptional growth opportunity for credit union employees in the collections and lending arena.
