The Call

The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 4:48 am on Saturday October 4th. On the phone was a woman saying they needed to come to the gas station. Upon arrival, officers discovered four children in a car, all had been shot.
Sheriff Bo Stallman reported that two of the children; a 13-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. The other two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, were flown by helicopter to a Houston hospital and were in critical but stable condition.
Arrested and booked into the Brazoria County Jail; the caller, their mother, 31-year-old Oninda Romelus who once appeared on “Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court” where none of the men tested turned out to be her child’s father.

The Devil

Court records report that during an interview at the Brazoria County Jail, Romelus appeared paranoid about her surroundings and repeatedly looked toward the door.
Detectives claim that Romelus had initially told them that she “couldn’t talk about it,” but then said, “Instead of them doing it to me, I’m gonna do it to them.” When they asked, “Do what?” she replied, “Kill them all,” records show. When asked again why she called 911, Romelus said she didn’t call 911, she “called the devil.”
Police records report that Romelus repeatedly stated that she was “ready to work,” a remark that detectives said did not make sense in context of the questioning. When asked about her children’s whereabouts, she allegedly stated to the deputies that they were with “the devil,” adding, “They’re dead,” and, “’Cause you can’t take me without me taking you.” She later said her children were “dead to her,” according to the court documents.

The House
Investigators went to Romelus’ home in Porter armed with a search warrant issued with the intent to find another one of Romelus’ children, a 17-year-old son, who was not with Romelus when the shooting occurred at the gas station. Breaking down the door, they did not find the teenager.
Initiating a search, multiple items were found including electronics and ammunition which were all seized from the home as evidence.
Also discovered was a large number of social security cards and other documents that illuminated the suspicion of more criminal activity. But being outside the scope of the original warrant, a follow up warrant was needed.

The Fraud Factory
Finally receiving the search warrant, detectives seized 33 social security cards, 48 identification cards and 16 credit cards, along with other items.
Detectives found the social security and identification cards had the identification of numerous different individuals. Some of the identification cards had Romelus’ photo on them, but with the names of different people.
Many of the social security cards and treasury checks had been issued to Romelus’ address but had other people’s names on them.
Police report that “the counterfeit identification documents were in various stages of manufacture bearing different names, states, and photographs.”
According to the warrant, multiple shipping labels, phones, computers, laptops, printers and other devices used “in the course of creating fraudulent pieces of identifying information,” were also found in the office of the home.

The Aftermath
Romelus, has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She remains in the Brazoria County Jail on a $14 million bond.
To date, no charges have been filed over the fake ID’s, checks and credit cards.
The two surviving children have been placed in foster care. The whereabouts of the 17-year-old remains unclear and appears that he is unaccounted for.
