Pitt County, NC – February 27, 2026 – A Greenville man is facing multiple felony charges following two separate investigations involving forged checks and a vehicle loan obtained using another person’s identity.
According to arrest warrants filed by the Greenville Police Department, Gregory Scot Tate, 59, of Greenville, has been charged in Pitt County with multiple counts including felony forgery of an instrument, uttering a forged endorsement, obtaining property by false pretenses, and identity theft.
Tate stands accused of using another person’s identifying information including a Social Security number and driver’s license number to obtain financing for a vehicle through CarMax Auto Superstores, Inc.

Court documents allege the fraudulent loan was used to finance a 2016 Nissan Frontier. Investigators state that documents related to the financing including a credit application, retail installment contract, buyer’s order, and authorization forms were forged
Authorities further allege the endorsement of the victim was falsely made and presented to CarMax as part of the transaction.

• Felony Identity Theft
• Felony Forgery of Instrument
• Felony Uttering a Forged Endorsement
In a separate case, authorities allege Tate forged a $250 check drawn on a State Employees Credit Union account. The check, made payable to “Gregory S. Tate,” reportedly included the forged signature of the account holder
Investigators state the check was presented to State Employees Credit Union for payment, and that Tate allegedly endorsed the check without authorization and with intent to defraud. As a result of the transaction, the credit union reportedly disbursed $250.

• Felony Uttering a Forged Endorsement
• Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretenses
• Felony Identity Theft
Both warrants were issued on September 23, 2025, in Pitt County District Court.
Tate was taken into custody and is awaiting further court proceedings. Under North Carolina law, all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
